In April 2019, Chakraborty began dating Sushant Singh Rajput, an actor. In September 2019, she and Rajput collaborated to launch Vividrage Rhealityx, an artificial intelligence startup. In December 2019, the couple moved in together. Six months after she left, on June 14, 2020, Rajput committed suicide at his Bandra, Mumbai, residence.

Sushant Singh Rajput’s demise

Rajput’s family filed a first information report (FIR) with Patna Police, the police department where his father resides, on July 25. The filing accused Chakraborty and multiple others of aiding and abetting suicide, illegal detention, wrongful restraint, theft, criminal breach of trust, and deception under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code. Rajput was afraid Chakraborty would frame him for his secretary’s suicide, and before his day of suicide, Chakraborty took away all doctor’s receipts, according to Rajput’s father, who made these claims in the FIR.

Rajput also told his sister about Chakraborty’s threat to make his medical receipts public and prove him insane. Chakraborty and her brother were questioned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on August 7th in relation to accusations of money laundering. The Indian Supreme Court gave the CBI permission to take up the inquiry on August 19. On September 8, Chakraborty was taken into custody by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), India’s main drug enforcement agency. The NCB accused Chakraborty and her brother of arranging for the supply of marijuana to Rajput.

Chakraborty’s judicial remand was prolonged by the Mumbai Sessions Court on October 6 until October 20 . However, the Bombay High Court granted her bail the following day. “Since she has no criminal antecedents,” the Supreme Court said, “there are reasonable grounds for believing that she is not likely to commit any offence while on bail.” The high court also dismissed the NCB’s argument that Chakraborty had encouraged and supported Rajput’s drug addiction, concluding that she was not a link in the network of drug dealers that were implicated in the case. Justice Sarang Kotwal observed, “She has not forwarded the drugs she allegedly procured to somebody else to earn monetary or other benefits.”

Rhea Chakraborty Coverage By The Media

Indian journalists and media outlets were found to be “equally complicit in pushing an agenda against Rhea Chakraborty” by Joyojeet Pal, an associate professor at the University of Michigan, and colleagues in their September 2020 paper “Anatomy of a Rumour: Social media and the suicide of Sushant Singh Rajput”. Specifically, in the month that followed Rajput’s passing, the news station Republic TV “pushed insinuations on the finances of Rhea Chakraborty’s parents.”

Rhea Chakraborty was harassed, slandered, and “intensely targeted by trolling and mainstream media speculation online” over time, according to the study. They come to the conclusion that “the case and its victims are a reminder of ways the patriarchy is alive and well, and always readying its blades for the next execution.”

The South China Morning Post reported on October 7, 2020, that “India’s hyperbolic television channels, which have given more airtime to this case than India’s battle against Covid-19 and the recent rapes of lower-caste women, labelled Chakraborty a ‘murderer’.” This came after nearly a month of pretrial confinement before Chakraborty was released on bail. After Rajput’s passing, Variety said that “Indian media, fueled by aggressive television anchors, has worked itself into an unprecedented feeding frenzy.” Variety reported that “haranguing television anchors appointed themselves judge and jury, with daily trials on primetime television” in the wake of Chakraborty’s arrest. Variety also said that the general public “appears to be consuming the ongoing drama with relish.”
