Her first significant starring role was in the popular serial series Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke on Zee TV. Mahima admitted in an interview that it wasn’t easy for her to get to this position in her career and that, before Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke, she had gone through more than 500 auditions.
Following Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke, Makawana portrayed the daughter of Gurdeep Kohli and Ram Kapoor in Dil Ki Baatein Dil Hi Jaane in March 2015. Following the conclusion of Dil Ki Baatein Dil Hi Jaane in August, Makwana signed the starring roles of Manasvini Choudhry, a Devrakshika, and her reincarnation, Radhika Khosla, a student of filmmaking who discovers her past existence, in Adhuri Kahaani Hamari in November 2015.

In 2015, Makwana costarred with Nikhil Chaddha in an episode of Zing’s youth series Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya as Mandira. Makwana portrayed Anami Baldev Singh, the main character, in the Star Plus series Rishton Ka Chakravyuh in August 2017.
Makwana took up Deshna Dugad’s position as the female lead, Mariam, in the Star Plus series Mariam Khan – Reporting Live in October 2018. In Colors TV’s Shubharambh, Makwana starred as the lead character Rani Dave Reshammiya from December 2019 to November 2020.

Makwana debuted in a film in 2017 with the Telugu flick Venkatapuram. Makwana made her screen debut as Natasha in the short film Take 2 in September 2019. Take 2 had its official selection and premiere in 2019 at the Asian Film Festival, Hollywood, Los Angeles, and the 10th Jagran Film Festival and 10th Zumba Film Festival. At the 2020 Real-time Film Festival in Nigeria, Take 2 took home the awards for “BEST FOREIGN FILM” and “Best Festival Themed Film.”
Makwana debuted on the internet in 2019 as Chiku in Rangbaaz Season 2. Makwana played Zoya in the web series Flesh in 2020.
Makwana made her screen debut in the Tollywood-Hollywood film Mosagallu in March 2021, with Kajal Agarwal, Vishnu Manchu, and Suniel Shetty.
Makwana was paired with Aayush Sharma in the female lead role of Antim: The Final Truth, which was released in December 2020. Critics gave Antim: The Final Truth, which was released on November 26, 2021, varying degrees of positive or mixed reviews. In the 2023 film Tumse Na Ho Payega, directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Roykapur Films, Makwana portrayed Devika, an urbane social media manager. “Mahima Makwana’s character has a very trendy job of being a social media manager for celebrities,” commented Grace Cyrill of IndiaToday. The performance by the actress is excellent.” Dhaval Roy of the Times of India stated that she “effortlessly essays her character as a practical young woman who doesn’t compromise on settling for a boyfriend who is not up to her standard, even if it means being in and out of relationships.”
Makwana will soon be seen in the Showtime television series from Dharma Productions, which also stars Emran Hashmi and Naseeruddin Shah.
