Actress Jayati Bhatia was born in India on July 28, 1970. Jayati Bhatia is well recognised for her performance on Colours TV’s Sasural Simar Ka (2011–2018), one of the longest-running Indian television programs ever, portraying Nirmala “Mataji” Bharadwaj. Additionally, she appeared in Sasural Simar Ka 2 (2021–2023) as Geetanjali Gopichand Oswal.

Jayati Bhatia Individual Life

Bhatia, who was born in Odisha, India, as Jayati Chatterjee to Chhoba Chatterjee, was originally from Bengal. However, when she was just a month old, her family relocated to Delhi. She received classical Odissi training as a child, but she has acknowledged that she struggles with western dance styles. Bhatia has two siblings: Mitul Chatterjee, her sister, and Surajeet Chatterjee, her brother.

During her debut show, Bhatia met her husband Kiran Bhatia, who urged her to get more involved in the theatre world. In April 2017, Kiran got into a fight with Sasural Simar Ka on her way to the sets, and as a result, he got physically assaulted. Bhatia has acknowledged that her mother-in-law helped her and that she is mostly responsible for her achievement. Supporters of LGBT rights include Bhatia. Chhoba Chatterjee, Bhatia’s mother, was 74 years old when she passed away in 2022 (June 21, 1947 – May 26, 2022).

Jayati Bhatia Career

The first few days and debut on television (1996–2007)

In 1995, Bhatia made her television debut in Hindi as Khushnuma on Challenge. She played Kumud in the Star Plus series Tu Tu Main Main. Jayati Bhatia collaborated with producer Ekta Kapoor on Kanyadaan, her first of many projects, and played a minor part in her production Itihaas.

As the spouse of Zed TV’s Kaise Kahoon, portrayed by Arun Govil, Bhatia started the following century and a half. Kapoor produced her next three ventures, starting with the comedy-drama Kitne Kool Hai Hum. The second one was Kutumb on Sony TV, in which she portrayed Kavita Mittal, the aunt of the male lead. She portrayed Geetu Basu in the cult classic daily soap opera Kasautii Zindagii Kay for three years in a row, from 2003 to 2006, during their third straight cooperation.

In the Sony TV series Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin from 2003, Bhatia also portrayed Bindiya, the friend of the titular lead. She was cast as Titli in Zed TV’s Sinndoor Tere Naam Ka in 2005. She played Mishti in Zed TV’s second attempt, Mamta, from 2006 to 2007.

Saas vs. Bahu and Kitchen Champion, the film debut (2007–2011)

Bhatia’s film career in Bollywood started with the drama 68 Pages, directed by Sridhar Rangayan, in which she played the role of commercial sex prostitute Payal. It had its global premiere at the Kerala International Film Festival and was screened at a number of other international film festivals. She worked with Kapoor again to play Pammi Godbole in the romantic comedy Kuchh Is Tara on Sony TV from 2007 to 2008. She signed up to compete in Sahara One’s dance television series Saas v/s Bahu for the first time in her career, making it all the way to the conclusion before taking home the title.

2009 saw Bhatia play Gursheel Malhotra in Sabki Laadli Bebo on Star Plus. That same year, Raja Krishna Menon’s dark comedy Barah Aana, her second picture, was released. She played Manju, a boisterous neighbour, in Star Plus’s Sasural Genda Phool from 2010 to 2011. Her first endeavour of 2011 was competing in the fourth season of the reality show Kitchen Champion, which is based on cooking and is hosted by Ronit Roy and Smita Singh. She won the show in the finale, making it her second triumph in a show following Saas vs. Bahu.

Beyond Sasural Simar Ka (2011–present)

Playing the role of Nirmala “Mataji” Bharadwaj, the matriarch of the Bharadwaj family, in Colours TV’s soap opera Sasural Simar Ka in April 2011, Bhatia had the most successful and highly acclaimed role of her career After a fantastic seven years running continuously, the show ended in March 2018, ranking among the longest-running Indian television series and one of the highest-rated television shows on TRP rankings.

She shot Sasural Simar Ka concurrently with the fifth season of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa in June 2012, but she was removed from the show the following month. She provided the voice of actress Ileana D’Cruz in the comedy-drama Barfi! directed by Anurag Basu that year. The film grossed over ₹175 crores worldwide. Her subsequent concurrent roles with Sasural Simar Ka shot were in Comedy Nights Bachao, a reality comedy series, and Rough Book, a feature film directed by Ananth Narayan Mahadevan. She starred in the movie The Wishing Tree in 2017.

Following the conclusion of Sasural Simar Ka in March 2018, Bhatia became the antagonist Kamini Kapoor in Star Plus’s Naamkarann. The final episode aired in May 2018, two months later. She started portraying Roopa Mittal’s hostile role in Colours TV’s Internet Wala Love in August 2018 and continued to do so until the show’s conclusion in March 2019. She dabbled in over-the-top (OTT) content and debuted digitally in 2019 with the horror-comedy Bhoot Purva, which was broadcast on ZEE5.

Tansener Tanpura, Bhatia’s debut web series, debuted on Hoichoi, an over-the-top platform, in 2020. She acted as Nutan Jaiswal in the romantic comedy Lockdown Ki Love Story on Star Plus from August 2020 to January 2021. She played a dean in the second season of the web series Girls Hostel, which was available to stream digitally on the over-the-top platform SonyLIV.

In Sasural Simar Ka 2, Bhatia portrayed Geetanjali Gopichand Oswal, a new character that debuted on Colours TV and Voot on April 26, 2021, and ran till April 7, 2023.
