Vir Das is an Indian comedian, actor, and musician who was born on May 31, 1979. Following a career in stand-up comedy, Das entered the Hindi film industry, appearing in supporting parts in films such as Delhi Belly (2011), Go Goa Gone (2013), and Badmaash Company (2010).

Vir Das gave a performance for Netflix’s Abroad Understanding special in 2017. Das has made appearances in almost 35 plays, more than 100 stand-up comedy performances, 18 motion pictures, 8 TV series, and 6 comedy specials. Vir Das has penned humorous essays for Tehelka, DNA, Femina, Maxim, and Exotica. He debuted on American television in 2019 with the Whisky Cavalier television series. For the Netflix comedy special Vir Das: Landing, he was the recipient of the 2023 International Emmy Award for Best Comedy Series.

Vir Das Individual Life

On May 31, 1979, Vir Das was born in Dehradun to Ranu and Madhur Das. Vir Das grew up in India and Nigeria. He studied at the Indian Language School located in Lagos, Nigeria. He studied at Delhi Public School in Noida and The Lawrence School in Sanawar, India. Vir Das left Sri Venkateswara College, University of Delhi, after spending 18 months there and moved to the United States.

Vir Das graduated with a bachelor’s degree in economics and theatre with a performance specialisation from Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois. Following his graduation from Knox, Das was granted admission to the combined Stanislavsky Programme of Moscow Arts Theatre and Harvard University. Vir Das has a sister named Trisha, who is a published novelist and documentarian and four years his senior. Vir Das stated in one of his programmes that his grandfather was a Bengali Padma Shri recipient. In October 2014, he wed Shivani Mathur, his five-year girlfriend.

Disputes Vir Das Two Indias

Das gave a humorous monologue titled “Two Indias” at the Kennedy Centre in November 2021. Vir Das compared the rich and the poor in India, denounced politicians and democratic regression, and pointed out differences in opinion on Bollywood films and cricket teams. He made the following statement on women: “I come from an India where we worship women during the day and gang-rape them at night.” Standing ovations were given to the performance[12], but Indian lawmakers accused Das of disrespecting India on foreign soil and filed seven police charges against him.

Netflix Vir Das

Reportedly, theatre producer Ashvin Gidwani of AGP World complained that Das had used material from his previous show in his Netflix special. This led the Mumbai police to file a formal complaint in November 2022 alleging that Vir Das, two other individuals, and the online streaming platform Netflix had violated copyright laws.

Vir Das Career

“Walking on Broken Das” was the title of his first performance at a prestigious hotel in New Delhi. Das’s TV career began when he hosted two Zoom TV shows. In the first, he played an agonising uncle on Is Route Ki Sabhin Linein Maast Hain. The other was his own late-night stand-up comedy programme, Ek Rahin Vir. Additionally, Das presented Star World’s Top Drive – Getaway.

Das has made appearances on several humorous TV shows. He was the host of the sports comedy programme Cricket Firsts on Zed Sports (now TEN Action+). He performed stand-up comedy on Lo Kar Lo Baat, a programme on SAB TV. Vir Das was a new member of the STAR One cast of The Great Indian Comedy Show. He is the anchor of CNN-IBN’s Now Not Showing.

Das has his own news humour programme, News on the Loose, on CNBC-TV18. On CNBC-TV18, News on the Loose now has a weekly half-hour special called News On The Loose — Weekend.

Das was chosen to play the role of comic relief in the Hallmark miniseries, The Curse of King Tut’s Tomb, which was shot in India. Early in 2006, he started shooting for his first two Bollywood roles. In the 2007 film Namastey London, directed by Vipul Shah, he had a minor role. Along with writing and directing History of India: VIRitten, Vir Das has collaborated with Ashvin Gidwani Productions-AGP on stand-up shows like Walking on Broken Das and Battle of Da Sexes.

Vir Das gave performances in the Fringe of the Edinburgh Festival in 2011 and 2022. With the release of his Netflix special Abroad Understanding on April 25, 2017, Das made history as the first Indian comic to have a comedy special on the platform.

Das was listed as one of Variety’s “10 Comics to Watch for 2017” in June 2017. Losing It, Das’s second Netflix comedy special, was released in December 2018.

Together with a few other stand-up comedians and celebrities, Das delves into the ways that Indians perceive humour in his travel-themed comedy series Jestination Unknown, which debuted in 2019.

In the “The Magic Motor Inn” episode of Fresh Off the Boat, he starred opposite Preity Zinta. Vir Das portrays an Indian family’s patriarch. The official spin-off of the same show will have Das’s onscreen family at its centre of the storyline. Vir Das appeared on Netflix in the one-hour show Vir Das: Outside In during the 2020 shutdown. Das gave a monologue titled “Two Indias” at the Kennedy Centre in Washington, D.C., on November 12, 2021.

In an interview with Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend on January 29, 2023, Das talked about his childhood trick of pretending to have appendicitis, his first on-stage giggle, the backlash to his “Two Indias” monologue, and his upcoming special, Vir Das: Landing.
