Rahul Bhat Life And Work

Childhood and employment

Bhat was born into a Kashmiri Pandit family in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir, India. Bhat worked as a fashion model for a while. He entered the Graviera Mr. India competition in 1998 and took home the Mr. Photogenic title. He participated in music videos such as “Punjabi Munda” for Tips Industries and “Soni Lag Gayee” with Pakistani artist Sajjad Ali. He also made commercials for Pond’s and Breeze detergent. His portrayal of Simone Singh in the highly regarded Sony Entertainment Television soap opera Heena, which ran for five years from 1998 to 2003, helped him become well-known.

In 2002, Bhat made his screen debut in Umesh Mehra’s love drama Yeh Mohabbat Hai. Although the movie did not receive a positive reception, Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama felt that he had made a “decent debut,” and Priyanka Bhattacharya of Rediff.com thought him to be “sincere.” In the comedy Nayee Padosan the following year, he portrayed two characters: a Tamil man and a don.

After becoming disillusioned with the types of roles he was receiving, Bhat decided to take a break from acting. Rather, he started his own production firm called Filmtonic Entertainment, where he made television soap operas such Tum Dena Saath Mera (2009), Chhukar Mere Man Ko (2007), and Meri Doli Tere Angana (2007–2008). Regarding this time, he has stated, “I stopped acting because I was upset.” I had no desire to work on assignments with B and C grades. I wanted to collaborate with devoted filmmakers on strong screenplays. However, nothing worked out for me, which disappointed me.”

Get back into acting

In his thriller Ugly (2013), director Anurag Kashyap recruited Bhat to play the role of a struggling actor whose daughter is abducted. Bhat began abusing alcohol and skipping sleep in order to be in shape for the part, which required him to play a guy with dark circles around his eyes. Kashyap spoke to Bhat for three hours during a scene where he was supposed to cry before he finally broke down and started crying. The camera did not stop during the segment.

Standing ovations were given to Ugly during its Directors’ Fortnight screening at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. It was also screened at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles and the New York Indian Film Festival. India Today’s Arunava Chatterjee praised Bhat as “outstanding” in Ugly and dubbed it a “pathbreaking crime fiction”. Screen Anarchy’s Brian Clark continued, saying that Bhat “does especially impressive work transitioning his character through some demanding plot twists and power shifts”.

Three years later, in 2016, Bhat starred in the crime film Jai Gangaajal with Priyanka Chopra and the romance drama Fitoor with Katrina Kaif. He had portrayed his character’s radicalism “with aplomb,” according to Srijana Mitra Das of The Times of India, who wrote a review for the latter movie despite his limited involvement.

The next year, Bhat starred in the Indian-Canadian drama Union Leader, which told the story of a chemical industry supervisor who confronts insensitive management about worker health and safety. Bhat’s “X factor to his performance” went beyond what the screenplay could have allowed, according to Anna M. M. Vetticad.

Bhat portrayed the lead role opposite Aditi Rao Hydari and Richa Chaddha in Sudhir Mishra’s romance drama Daas Dev (2018), which was a reimagining of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s classic Devdas set in the political climate of Uttar Pradesh. Alongside Chaddha and Akshaye Khanna, he starred in the courtroom drama Section 375 in 2019. He portrayed a Bollywood filmmaker who was allegedly raped. In the words of Rajeev Masand, he “does well as the arrogant director.”

Bhat featured in the experimental single-shot short film Man Naked in 2021. In 2022, Bhat and Anurag Kashyap got back together for the Spanish mystery film Dobaaraa, which starred Taapsee Pannu. Anupama Chopra stated that Bhat’s “frayed good looks and exhausted manner infuse a much-needed comic edge into the film” and that he is the “most notable character” in the movie. Kennedy, Kashyap’s most recent film, had a resounding reception during its Cannes Film Festival 2023 premiere. Since then, it has screened at BIFAN and the Sydney Film Festival.
