Harsh Varrdhan Kapoor Career

Prior to making his acting debut, Kapoor assisted with the 2015 film Bombay Velvet, directed by Anurag Kashyap.

When Rakesh Omprakash Mehra, the creator of Rang De Basanti and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, approached him for an art house romantic musical called Mirzya, Harsh Varrdhan made his acting debut. Gulzar, who won the Oscar for writing Mirzya, employed a bold and unorthodox storytelling technique by using a Greek chorus and poetry as guides. Harsh trained for the movie for more than a year after he signed the deal in 2013. Harsh Varrdhan Kapoor practiced the two different roles he had to play in the movie and picked up horseback riding and archery. In 2016, Mirzya made its world premiere at the esteemed London Film Festival to largely excellent reviews from the foreign press, including the New York Times.

However, back home in India, it was met with mixed reviews and did not do well commercially. In her review, Meena Iyer of Times of India rated the movie a 3 out of 5, complimented protagonists Harsh Varrdhan and Saiyami on their performances, and described the movie as “A broad, brash Bollywood romance, juggling Punjabi folklore with more contemporary Shakespearean allusions in its two-tiered narrative”. The Economic Times rated the movie 3.5 out of 5 and wrote, “Harsh Vardhan Kapoor & Saiyami Kher give an impressive performance, but it’s a one-time watch.”

Vikramaditya Motwane’s vigilante drama Bhavesh Joshi Superhero was Harsh’s next feature. The movie, which was financed by Eros, Reliance, and Phantom Films, debuted in June 2018 to conflicting reviews. Film enthusiasts applauded the picture for its technical prowess, realistic portrayals, and potent performances, but some objected to the startlingly long running time and formulaic plot. Only after the film’s digital release did it begin to pick up steam, with raving reviews exploding on YouTube and throughout the blogosphere. Bhavesh Joshi has developed a devoted cult following in the months and years that have passed; some call it the greatest superhero movie ever made in India and are pushing for a sequel.

Despite garnering favourable reviews, the movie was a box office failure, making only ₹4.35 crore on an expenditure of ₹21 crore. Neil Soans of The Times of India gave the movie a grade of 3.5 out of 5 and complimented the acting performances and the movie’s fundamental concept, giving Priyanshu Painyuli extra recognition. Raja Sen of NDTV stated that although the movie had outstanding acting talents and genuine intentions, the storyline is weak and unoriginal, making the movie uninteresting to watch. News18’s Rajeev Masand praised the film’s concept, Amit Trivedi’s acting, and its soundtrack, but he criticised the script’s bad writing and awarded it a 2.5 out of 5 rating.

In the Netflix film AK vs AK (2019), he collaborated with Vikramaditya Motwane once more, portraying a fictitious version of himself alongside his sister and father. Critics loved Harsh’s brief appearance. According to reports, Harsh had also committed to playing the lead in Sriram Raghavan’s Andhadhun, but he was ultimately forced to back out owing to schedule issues.

Harsh Varrdhan Kapoor made an appearance on a Ray Netflix show episode in 2021. “Manoj Bajpayee, Harsh Varrdhan Kapoor, Ali Fazal, and Radhika Madan lead a handful of excellent performers in Netflix’s irreverent but inconsistent anthology, based on Satyajit Ray’s short stories,” Rohan Naahar stated in his review of the Hindustan Times.

Harsh Varrdhan Kapoor co-produced and starred in the movie Thar in 2022, which debuted on Netflix on May 6 of that same year. In pivotal parts in the movie were Satish Kaushik and his father, Fatima Sana Shaikh. Raj Singh Chaudhary directed and co-wrote it. The author of the dialogues is Anurag Kashyap.

Critics gave it mixed to excellent reviews; some criticised its predictable plot, writing, and editing, while others commended the director, photography, acting, dialogues, background score, and its nods to the Western genre. “Thar is a surprise of the season and worth watching for its plot, direction, music score, and the never-before-seen locales of Rajasthan,” stated Bollywood Hungama’s Taran Adarsh, awarding the movie 3.5 out of 5 stars. The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw rated the movie three out of five stars, noting that “this Rajasthan-set mystery starring the actor and his son has hints of Sergio Leone and Cormac McCarthy.” Bharathi Pradhan from Lehren rated the movie as “Cruel & Compelling” with a grade of 3 out of 5.

The Times of India’s Renuka Vyavahare rated the movie three out of five stars, writing, “Anil Kapoor’s film choices are only getting better and bolder with age.” He’s demonstrating to the OTT clan and millennials what it takes to be a certified movie star, whether it’s Thar or AK vs. AK.” “Shots of the sprawling desert landscape give one that classic western feel that can transport them back in time to the classic westerns or even the spaghetti westerns,” stated Reubyn Coutinho of Netflix Junkie.

“While Chaudhary has made a great attempt at bringing forth a dark neo-noir thriller, he has just squandered a great plot at hand,” observed Outlook India’s Prateek Sur, awarding the movie a rating of 3/5 stars. At the moment, he is producing and acting in the biopic of gold medallist Abhinav Bindra from the Olympics.

Artistry Kapoor’s role in the Netflix anthology series Ray was adapted from Satyajit Ray’s short tale Spotlight by director Vasan Bala, which came after his role in AK vs AK. Ray opened to mostly favourable reviews, with the biggest recognition going to Bala and Abhishek Chaubey’s works. Later, Ray received a nomination for the Filmfare OTT Awards’ Best Film category.

With Ray, AK vs AK, and Bhavesh Joshi, Harsh quickly established a solid reputation for selecting wise films. Harsh Varrdhan Kapoor worked with his father, Anil Kapoor, on his next film, Thar. Thar, India’s first western noir action thriller, was co-written by Anurag Kashyap, helmed by actor-turned-director Raj Singh Chaudhary, and starred Harsh. Harsh Varrdhan Kapoor had a difficult time getting the movie financed because of its risky genre and format until Netflix gave it the go-ahead.

He put a lot of effort into his physicality to play a quiet character with lots of grey areas so that his body language might convey more information than his words. It received fantastic reviews both domestically and abroad when it debuted on Netflix in 2022. Thar was found to be one of the most seen and well-liked OTT originals in 2022 by an Ormax media study. Notably, Thar was Harsh’s first production under the AKFC label.

Harsh refined his skills with the guidance of acting trainers Suraj Vyas and Jeff Goldberg throughout the pandemic. He has frequently expressed openly how much he implicitly trusts his mentors to advise him on new endeavours.
