In 2009, Deol made his big screen debut as the lead in Anurag Kashyap’s neo-noir film Dev.D, which was a contemporary take on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s beloved Bengali romantic book Devdas. Kashyap got the concept for the movie from Deol, who told him about a man who was like a “modern day Devdas” who frequented a strip club in Los Angeles. In 2012, Deol starred in two political thrillers: Shanghai by Dibakar Banerjee and Chakravyuh by Prakash Jha. In the latter, Deol played a police informant alongside Arjun Rampal, but he afterwards joined the Naxalite movement. Film critics gave the movie varying ratings. Shanghai, which starred Emraan Hashmi and Kalki Koechlin, was inspired by Vassilis Vassilikos’ French novel Z. Disney Channel original film Spin, hailed as Disney’s first film centred around an Indian-American family, starred Deol in the role of Arvind Kumar, the father of the protagonist Rhea Kumar, an adolescent girl who discovers she has a passion for creating DJ mixes, and the crime comedy film Velle. In 2021, Deol was seen in the series 1962: The War in the Hills as Major Suraj Singh, a character inspired by Major Shaitan Singh.
