Born on March 5, 1966, Aasif Hakim Mandviwala, also professionally known as Aasif Mandvi (/ˈɑ˞sɪf ˈmɑːndvi/, AH-sif MAHND-vee), is an American-British actor, comedian, and writer. From 2006 till 2017, he worked as a correspondent for The Daily Show. The HBO comedy series The Brink and the CBS/Paramount+ psychological drama Evil are among Mandvi’s other television credits.

Aasif Mandvi portrayed Commander Zhao in The Last Airbender and Mr. Aziz in Spider-Man 2. His theatrical credits include Broadway roles in Oklahoma! as Ali Hakim and in the Pulitzer Prize-winning 2012 production of Disgraced.
Aasif Mandvi Childhood
Mandvi was born into a Dawoodi Bohra Muslim family in Bombay (now Mumbai), Maharashtra, India.When he was a year old, his family relocated to Bradford, West Yorkshire, in England. After arriving to work in Bradford University’s textile research department, Hakim, his father, ran a corner store. Fatima, his mother, worked as a nurse. Mandvi considers himself a “working-class kid from Bradford” and went to the private Woodhouse Grove School.
When Mandvi was sixteen years old, his father moved the family to Tampa, Florida, in the United States, because he was fed up with Margaret Thatcher’s government in the early 1980s. Chamberlain High School was his high school.

Early
Mandvi performed at Disney-MGM Studios at Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Studios Florida after earning a degree in theatre from the University of South Florida . After that, he relocated to New York City and started making appearances in off-Broadway shows. He was involved with the band Cowboys and Indian at this period. For his one-man performance Sakina’s Restaurant, he was awarded an Obie Award.
Mandvi made an appearance on Broadway in Trevor Nunn’s 2002 production of Oklahoma! as Ali Hakim. Additionally, he made an appearance in Tony Kushner’s play Homebody/Kabul. In the Off Broadway production Einstein’s Gift, he played Fritz Haber.

Mandvi performed as Melchior in Tom Stoppard’s play On the Razzle at the Williamstown Theatre Festival. She also made an appearance in the Culture Project’s documentary Guantanamo: Honour Bound to Defend Freedom. Mandvi played the lead role in Disgraced at Lincoln Center’s Claire Tow Theatre in 2012. In Ayad Akhtar’s drama, he portrayed the title character, Amir, a Pakistani-American lawyer who struggles with his identity and faith. The drama play took home the 2013 Pulitzer Prize. For his performance, Mandvi received a Lucille Lortel Award nomination.

In Miami Vice’s “Line of Fire” episode, Mandvi makes his screen debut as a doorman at the Miami Biltmore Hotel. He has made appearances in a number of television series, including Sleeper Cell, Criminal Intent, Special Victims Unit, Trial by Jury, ER, The Sopranos, Sex and the City, CSI, Oz, Ed, The Bedford Diaries, Jericho, and Sleeper Cell. He read aloud the audio versions of V. S. Naipaul’s Magic Seeds (2004) and Salman Rushdie’s Shalimar the Clown (2005). He made appearances in Taco Bell ads in 2011.
Mandvi tried out for The Daily Show in 2006. He was employed right away and made his television debut that same day. Since 2007, Mandvi has been a regular correspondent. In three episodes of the Netflix series A Series of Unfortunate Events, which aired starting in 2017, Mandvi played Montgomery “Uncle Monty” Montgomery, a herpetologist and distant relative of the Baudelaire kids.
Mandvi was chosen to play Ben Shakir, a carpenter who serves as a technical specialist, equipment handler, and debunker of unexplained phenomena, in the Robert and Michelle King supernatural drama series Evil on CBS in 2019.

Mandvi portrayed the lead in Merchant Ivory Productions’ film The Mystic Masseur and had small roles in the films The Siege and Die Hard with a Vengeance. In the indie film American Chai, he played “Engineering Sam,” the roommate of the main character, in a significant supporting role.
In Analyse This, he portrayed the physician who identified Paul Vitti’s (Robert De Niro) panic attacks. In Spider-Man 2, he appeared as Mr. Aziz from “Joe’s Pizza”. Additionally, he appeared in advertisements for the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) and Domino’s Pizza. In Music and Lyrics, he portrayed the tone deaf doorman Khan.
He starred in the coming-of-age movie It’s Kind of a Funny Story, which was written and directed by Anna Boden and starred Ryan Fleck. It was based from the 2006 Ned Vizzini novel. In the movie The Response, which was based on the transcripts of Combatant Status Review Tribunals held in Guantanamo in 2004, he also had a supporting role as a prisoner held there. Mandvi was a key character as Commander Zhao in M. Night Shyamalan’s 2010 film The Last Airbender. Mandvi portrays Ash Vasudevan in the 2014 film Million Dollar Arm and Mr. Chetty in the 2013 comedy The Internship.
Aasif Mandvi Individual Life
At Atlanta’s The Fox Theatre on August 27, 2017, Mandvi tied the knot with author and humanitarian Shaifali Puri, his girlfriend of three years. Their lone child was born on March 14, 2020.
Mandvi has been identified as having persistent tinnitus. After giving the commencement address in 2019, he was given an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Degree by the Macaulay Honours College in June of that same year.
