Manav Kaul is an Indian theatre director, playwright, novelist, actor, and filmmaker who was born on December 19, 1976. For his work in the movies Saina (2021) and Tumhari Sulu (2017), he received a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Kaul was born into a Kashmiri Pandit family on December 19, 1976, in Baramulla, Jammu & Kashmir, India. Manav Kaul was raised in Hoshangabad, Madhya Pradesh, after his family relocated there subsequently.

In his late teens, he competed in swimming competitions, winning titles at the state and national levels. He is a 14-time national swimming medalist.
Manav Kaul Career
Theater
In 2004, Kaul founded the theater company Aranya. In his 2010 play Red Sparrow, he gave tribute to Nirmal Verma, Vinod Kumar Shukla, and Charles Bukowski, among others, who influenced him.
He’s directed and written thirteen plays. Ilhaam, Park, and Shakkar Ke Paanch Daane, which translates to “Five Grain Sugar,” are some of his well-known pieces. The latter was his debut as a director and playwright.
In 2004, Kaul presented a dramatic monologue in Hindi titled Shakkar Ke Paanch Daane, which tells the story of a small-town resident whose “structured middle-India existence begins to feel suspiciously like a lie.” It starred actor Kumud Mishra, who would go on to work with him for a long period. In the words of the Mumbai Theatre Guide, “the final poetic denouement is neat, funny, reflective, but unfortunately all too expected, all too perfect.” The play was a theater hit and was translated by Arshia Sattar and played in English in 2009.
Peele’s upcoming play, Scooter Wala Aadmi Kaul used a lyrical conversation style akin to those of Vinod Kumar Shukla and Nirmal Verma to examine a father-son connection in an open-ended story. In 2006, it brought him the Best Script Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Award (META).
Moving away from personal monologues, Kaul presented Bali aur Shambhu, a bitter-sweet meditation on aging, with Sudhir Pandey and Mishra in 2006. “Not as philosophical as Shakkar Ke Paanch Daane, yet, it’s a story that tugs at your heartstrings and has its moments,” the Times of India observed, and the Mumbai Theatre Guide characterised it as “one of those plays that appeal to the senses but not to the intellect. “I wrote the play after I visited an old-age home,” Kaul said. My aim was to demonstrate that enjoyment is not limited to the elderly.”

The Hindu praised Kaul’s “treatment of non-verbal, physical expression” in Ranga Shankara’s 2009 Hindi rendition of Jean-Paul Sartre’s Huis Clos. Chuhal, a 1994 drama by Kaul, explores love, relationships, and marriages in an era before technology. It has been performed on stage twice in Hyderabad—once at Ravindra Bharathi and again at Rangbhoomi Spaces by KissaGo Theatre Group—and on Zee Theater in Mumbai, Delhi , and Theatrenama in Bangalore.
Movies
Kaul made his directing debut in 2012 with the film Hansa, for which he also penned the screenplay. In the Gujarat-based Hindi drama Kai Po Che! (2013), he played a right-wing politician, for which he received praise. He made his acting debut in Hindi cinema with the fantasy film Jajantaram Mamantaram in 2003.
Composing
Kaul is a writer who focuses on existentialist, nostalgia, loneliness, and other subjects. Chalta Phirta Pret, Antima, Bahut Door Kitna Door Hota hai, and Theek Tumhare Peeche are a few of his well-known works. Kaul’s journey back to his lost homeland of Kashmir is explored in his recently released novel, Rooh.
