Born on September 18, 1989, Ashwini Ponnappa Machimanda is an Indian badminton player who competes for her country in the women’s and mixed doubles categories on the international badminton circuit. Ashwini Ponnappa enjoyed a fruitful relationship with Jwala Gutta, with whom she shared numerous medals from international competitions.

Ashwini Ponnappa won her maiden national championship in the sub-junior girls’ doubles division in 2004. Ashwini Ponnappa was born in 2001. In addition, she took home the national titles in junior girls’ doubles in 2006 and 2007 as well as the sub-junior girls’ doubles title in 2005. In the mixed doubles and team events at the 2010 South Asian Games, she took home the gold medal. She made history by becoming the first Indian to win a gold medal in the Women’s Doubles event at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, partnering with Jwala Gutta. Ashwini Ponnappa and Gutta made history later in 2011 by being the first Indian pair to secure a medal at the World Badminton Championships, putting on one of their best performances to date. The Indonesian duo upset the 12th-seeded Vita Marrisa and Nadya Melati 17-21, 21-10, 21-17 to go to the women’s doubles semifinal. They were defeated by the fifth-seeded Chinese team in the London semifinals, but they still took home a bronze medal from the Badminton World Championship.

Ashwini Ponnappa competed in the 2012 London Olympics women’s doubles competition. Ponnappa and Gutta were defeated by the Japanese pair of Mizuki Fujii and Reika Kakiiwa in their opening women’s doubles encounter. They subsequently proceeded to record their first group stage victory, defeating Chinese Taipei’s considerably better rated Wen Hsing Cheng and Yu Chin Chien 25–23, 16–21, and 21–18. After tying with Japan and Taipei on the amount of wins, Jwala and Ashwini defeated Shinta Mulia Sari and Lei Yao of Singapore 21-16 21-15 in their last group B match to just lose out on a quarterfinal berth.

The World No. 5 Japanese duo of Mizuki Fujii and Reika Kakiiwa, along with Chinese Taipei’s Cheng Wen Hsing and Chien Yu Chin, ranked 10th, had surprisingly fallen to them, 19-21 11-21, prior to Tuesday night’s India group match. Following the elimination of medal aspirations Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa in the women’s doubles badminton event between China Taipei and Japan, India filed an official protest with the Games organisers to enquire as to whether the match was played in the correct spirit. However, no action was done.

Jwala temporarily stopped playing the game after the Olympic Games. Later in 2013, Ponnappa briefly teamed up with Pradnya Gadre before getting back together with Jwala. Ponnappa and Gutta defeated a Malaysian pair in the final of the women’s doubles at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, but they still took home the silver medal. Playing together with Jwala, they defeated the top-seeded Dutch duo of Eefje Muskens and Selena Piek on June 29, 2015, to win the Canada Open women’s doubles championship.

She participated in the 2016 Olympics alongside Gutta, however they were eliminated after losing all three of their group stage matches. Ponnappa competed for India in the 2018 Commonwealth Games, where she won bronze in the women’s doubles competition with N. Sikki Reddy and gold in the mixed team competition.
