Indian director Rima Das, who was born in 1977, is well renowned for her 2017 picture Village Rockstars, which took home multiple national and international accolades. It was declared India’s official submission for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar at the 90th Academy Awards . Selected from a field of 28 Indian submissions, it was the inaugural Assamese film to be nominated for an Oscar.

The movie took home the Best Film and Best Editor National Awards in India. Das was listed as one of the 50 most significant young Indians of 2018 by GQ India. Rima Das also serves as one of the brand ambassadors for the Share Her Journey campaign, which supports gender equality in films, at the Toronto International Film Festival. Rima Das has served on the juries for the Zlin Film Festival for Children & Youth, Mumbai International Film Festival, Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, and Berlin International Film Festival Generation 14plus.
At the third convocation of Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University (KKSHOU), which took place in February 2018 at the Srimanta Sankardeva International Auditorium, Rima Das was awarded a PhD.
Rima Das Career
In 2009, Das produced her debut short film, Pratha. In 2013, she began work on her debut feature film, Antardrishti (Man with the Binoculars), which was filmed in Kalardiya using a Canon DSLR. Antardrishti was presented in 2016 at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival as well as the Mumbai Film Festival.
Rima Das established herself as a one-woman show, managing art direction and costume design in addition to writing, directing, producing, editing, and filming. Das lacks any kind of filmmaking training. She thinks that this has helped her career greatly:
In a way, not attending a film school and lacking training allowed me to be more authentic and explore new ideas. I didn’t approach the writing, directing, cinematography, or editing in the same way that professionals with training would. I could make my own cinema and have a deeper understanding of my trade. I was motivated and developed a global perspective on filmmaking from seeing international films. However, I believe that my distinct approach made me stand out.

Village Rockstars is the second Assamese film, following Jahnu Barua’s Halodhia Choraye Baodhan Khai (The Catastrophe), to receive national recognition. The movie tells the tale of Dhunu, an Assamese girl from a village who wants to start a rock band and buy a guitar.
Bulbul Can Sing, her 2018 feature film, had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Sunshine Dreamers, her first documentary fiction film, was made by her in 2019. She also directed a short film titled For Each Other, which debuted at the 3rd Pingyao International Film Festival.
Her newest movie, Tora’s Husband, has been chosen to compete in the Platform section of the Toronto International Film Festival and will have its world premiere there in 2022. This is the first Indian movie to be featured in the particular category. “We shot the film over two years in real locations and natural conditions, in the midst of loss, lockdowns, and life,” says Rima Das about her experience working on the project.
Compared to my other films, this one was more difficult to shoot because of all the restrictions imposed by the epidemic. Constantly there was this restlessness and worry, which my characters also portray. But I knew that I had to record this movie because, one day, this moment will be remembered as history.”

Rima Das is influenced by renowned directors Majid Majidi, Ingmar Bergman, and Satyajit Ray as a filmmaker.
Rima Das Individual Life
Das is from the Assamese village of Kalardiya, which is 50 kilometres southwest of Guwahati and close to Chhaygaon. Rima Das is a teacher’s daughter. After completing her sociology master’s degree at Pune University, she passed the National Eligibility Test (NET). But in 2003, her aspiration to become an actor brought her to Mumbai. She performed in theatrical productions, like as the Prithvi Theatre’s version of Premchand’s Godaan.
