Patel is the younger brother of model and actress Ameesha Patel , the son of Amit and Asha Patel, and the grandson of lawyer and politician Rajni Patel, the former president of Mumbai’s Congress Pradesh Committee. The first three letters of his mother Asha’s name and the last three letters of his father Amit’s name are combined to form his birth name. His mother identified as a “Sindhi Punjabi” in an interview, although his father is Gujarati.

After attending the John Connon School and Cathedral in Mumbai, Patel went on to study at the University of Texas in Austin in the United States, where he graduated in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in business. Beginning his film career as an assistant director, Patel collaborated with Vikram Bhatt on the films Footpath (2003), Awara Paagal Deewana (2002), Raaz (2002), and Aap Mujhe Achche Lagne Lage (2002). In the Vikram Bhatt-directed movie Inteha, he made his acting debut. Ashmit Patel starred with Mallika Sherawat and Emraan Hashmi in the 2004 thriller Murder, which was modelled off the Bollywood film Unfaithful. It was his first big box office hit.
Patel acted in the thriller Nazar by Soni Razdan and the multi-starrer Silsiilay by Khalid Mohammed in 2005. At the box office, neither movie was a success. He portrayed prominent roles in Banaras, Fight Club, and Dil Diya Hai in 2006. He costarred with Mahima Chaudhary and Rekha in the comedy Kudiyon Ka Hai Zamana in 2007. In 2009, Toss, his next movie, was released.
In the fourth season of the Indian television reality series Bigg Boss, Patel was one of the finalists. In addition to working on the films Good Night and Future Toh Bright Hai Jee, he was the host of Superstud on UTV Bindass. Superdude was his host on UTV Bindass.
The upcoming web series Peshawar by Ullu App, which is based on the 2014 Peshawar school massacre, will be his digital debut. He will assume the part of terrorist Abu Shamil, who planned the assaults and was able to indoctrinate the other members of his group into carrying out this horrible deed.
