Banerjee used to sing children’s songs and studied Hindustani classical music and ghazals from her mother. Nyra Banerjee also studied Kathak, a classical dance style, but had to give it up because of her father’s transferable employment. Nyra Banerjee was discovered one day while recording a song by renowned filmmaker G. V. Iyer, who contracted her for the Hindi television series Kadambari. G. V. Iyer had planned to film a Ramayana film in which she was to play Sita, but the project never got off the ground after the director passed away. Nyra Banerjee had to decline several large offers, though, because of her studies, until Priyadarshan persuaded her to take the lead in his film.
